Widow's Claim for Pension

The State of West Virginia, County of Marshall,

On this 25th day of March, AD, 1864, personally appeared before Howsan Riggs, Clerk of the Circuit Court, a Court of Record within and for said county, Eliza White, aged 31 years, a resident of the county of Marshall, and State of West Virginia, who, being first duly sworn according to law, doth, on her oath, make the following declarations, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress approved July 14,1862. That she is the widow of Alexander White who was a Private in Company B, commanded by Captain John C. Roberts, in the 12th Regiment of Virginia Vol. Infantry, commanded by Col. I. B. Klunk, in the war of 1861.

That her said husband died at Winchester, in the State of Virginia, on the 18th day of June A.D. 1863, of wounds received in the battle of Winchester on the 14th day of June 1863, while in the line of duty in the service of the United States.

She further declares that she was married to the said Alexander White in Greene Co. PA., on the 21st day of January A.D., 1851, by one Henry Pletcher, a Minister of the Gospel; that her name before her marriage was Eliza Miller, and that ever since the death of her said husband, she has remained a widow: as will more fully appear by reference to the proof annexed. "I have no record of my said marriage except that in my family bible."
That during the existence of the aforesaid marriage there were born to her and her said husband the following named children, who are now under the age of sixteen years,
Margaret Ellen White born the 2nd day of November, 1851;
Benjamin Franklin White born, 26th day of December, 1853;
William Morgan White born 21st day of April, 1856;
Ruth Jane White born, 13th day of October, 1858.

all of whom are still living, and reside in Marshall County, West Virginia.

She also declares that she has in no manner been engaged in, or aided or abetted, the Rebellion in the United States.

Sir:

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt from your Office of Communication of 19 just relative to application for Pension No. 56002, and to return it, herewith, with such information as is furnished by the files of this Office.

It appears from the Rolls on file in this Office, that Alexander White was enrolled on the 12th day of August, 1862, at Cameron, Va. in Co. "B", 12th Regiment of Virginia Volunteers, to serve 3 years, or during the war, and mustered into service as a Private on the 20th day of August, 1862, at Wheeling, Va, in Co. "B", 12th Regiment of Virginia Volunteers, to serve 3 years, or during the war. On the Muster Roll of Co. "B" of that Regiment, for the months of September & October 1863, he is reported "Died in Hospital at Winchester, Va., June 18th 1863 of wounds received at Winchester, Va., June 14th 1863."

Affidavit of Surgeon caring for wounded.

State of West Virginia, County of Harrison,
" I, Fred H. Patton, depon that I am the identical person who was Asst. Surgeon. 12th W.Va. Inf; that I was left behind when our army retreated from Winchester, Va. June 15, 1863 to attend to our sick; that I personally know that Alexander White was a Private Co. B, said regiment; and that I have personal knowledge that said soldier while in the line of his duty was stuck by a shell in (I think) right leg in battle June 14, 1863 from which he died after amputation of said limb June 18, 1863 in hospital when I was on duty; said death was result of said wound. I have no interest in Eliza White's claim for Pension as widow of said Alexander White; I reside Morgantown, Monongalia Co. West Va; that aforsaid death occurred at Winchester, Va.
