SERVICE RECORD OF JOHN W. HANLINE

John W. Hanline (also spelled Henline), born in Hardy County, (West) Virginia about 1827, died of Chronic Diarrhea at the end of the war. He died at the U. S. General Hospital at Fort Monroe, Virginia on June 21/22, 1865, a few days after being discharged when his company mustered out. He had been hospitalized previously with Chronic Diarrhea. He was interred at the National Cemetery, Hampton, Virginia, grave #2649. He had enrolled on August 16, 1862 at Grafton to serve three years; he mustered in at Wheeling on August 27.

The soldier was the son of Martin Hanline and Rebecca Hays/Hayes, according to West Virginia Death Records. He married Sarah Elizabeth Harvey in Allegany County, Maryland on September 9, 1848. At the time of the 1850 census of Hardy County, John and Sarah had a son, William M., age 1. In 1860, they were residents of Barbour County, with the following children: William H., 10; Nathaniel B., 8; Thomas A., 6; Isaac M., 4; Samuel B., 3; Johnathan, 1.

Dependent children, under the age of 16, named in the widow's pension claim were Thomas A., Isaac M., Samuel B., Jonathan T., Ozias C., Mary E. - Based on the record, the youngest was born on September 5, 1863.
