WILLIAM HEWITT, FIRST LIEUTENANT, Company "I"

     William Hewitt was 32 years old when he mustered in at Wheeling, W.Va. 28 Aug 1862. He was promoted from Sergeant to 2nd Lieutenant, order of April 6, 1864, vice Campbell promoted 1st Lieutenant. Wounded in thigh 15 May 1864 at New Market, Va. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant order of 11 Nov 1864, vice Campbell dismissed. Mustered out at Richmond, Virginia 16 Jun 1865.

     At a reunion of the 12th West Virginia Infantry in New Cumberland, W.Va., in 1889, William Hewitt was selected by his comrades to compile the history of the Twelfth Regiment. His book is presented in its entirety on this web site.
