      Jonathan Cox, born 5 April 1827, was the son of John Cox (1777-1853) and Elizabeth Huffman (1790-1862). John Cox was Elizabeth's second husband and their children were James, Jonathan, George, Friend and Sallie. From her previous marriage to Samuel Strong, Elizabeth had a son, Benjamin Franklin Strong.

     On 26 Sep 1860 in West Alexander, Pa., Jonathan Cox married Samantha Jane Springer (1834-1904). Samantha's first marriage was to Robert Whittaker, with whom she had two children, Winfield Scott Whittaker (1852-1886) and Mary Alice Whittaker Amick (1855-1918). Samantha's mother died when she was two weeks old and she was raised by her grandparents, Peter and Margaret Rambo.

     On 24 May 1880, Jonathan Cox applied for a government pension. His application was granted; the certificate number is 474.060. His widow received a pension after his death, which occurred 4 Sep 1900. He is buried at the Brooke Cemetery, Brooke County, West Virginia.
