JAMES T. MAXWELL,
(alias JAMES H. DAVIS)
Company "E"

James T. Maxwell served in Company "E" of the 12th West Virginia Infantry, apparently using his real name, James T. Maxwell. He had previously served in the 147 Penna. Infantry and the 5th Penna. Heavy Artillery using the name, James H. Davis.

The 1864 Adjutant General's Report, reflecting the status of the companies at the end of December 1864, indicates that James Maxwell was "Undergoing sentence of General Court Martial at Wheeling" at that time.

The wife of James T. Davis was Ruth Maxwell, according to the pension card at the National Archives. She applied for and obtained a Widow's Pension. Her application has been ordered from the National Archives, as well as the Service Record of her husband.

James Thomas Maxwell, born August 5, 1843 in Harrison County, (W.)Va., was the son of Nathaniel (Than) & Clementine (Davis) Maxwell, the latter born in 1825 in Fayette Co., Penna. James may have been raised with the name James H. Davis but the Service and Pension records should shed light on that.

Than Maxwell was the son of David J. Maxwell, Jr., & Catherine Williams. Clemantine Davis was the daughter of Rev. Jesse William Davis (s/o William "Bottom Billy" Davis & Elizabeth Havens) and Hannah Davis (d/o Joshua Gifford Davis and Content Davis). These Davis families were the original settlers of Salem, (W) Virginia.

James married (1) Ammaretta Davis (d/o William "Buckeye Billy" Davis & Martha Hughes), February 15, 1866 in Doddridge County, W.Va. (2) Ruth E. Williams, September 13, 1874 in Harrison County, West Virginia.

James' brother, Isaac Newton Maxwell, also served in the 12th Infantry.
