Submitted by Nanci Headley Kotowski.

John Odle Martin served in Capt. James W. Moffatt's Co. G 12th (W)Va. Infantry Vols. He was AWOL briefly (presumably during planting season). He sustained a leg wound in the Cedar Creek skirmish for which he received a disability pension.

According to the family Bible records found in the Tetrick Collection and according to Martin family records, John Odle Martin was born 17 Dec 1834, in Harrison Co., (W)Va. His mother was Dorcas "Darkey" Martin who never married his father, John Odle (s/o Joshua Odle and Susannah "Polly" Davis). John Odle Martin and his sister, Martha Martin, were raised in the home of their maternal grandparents, John Spencer Martin and Mary "Polly" Nay.

John Odle Martin married 23 Feb 1853 near Shinns Mill, Harrison Co., (W)Va., Millie Ann Crimm, daughter of Peter Crimm and Susan (or Susannah) Nay. Millie was born 8 May 1836 Harrison Co., (W)Va., and died 11 Jan 1872 in Harrison Co., W.Va.

Eight children were born of this union: Peter Franklin Martin, Jacob Leroy Martin, Amaziah "Bin" Martin, William Milroy "Dude" Martin, Joseph T. Martin, Benjamin Bassel Martin, Susan Dorcas Martin, and Millie Ann Martin.

[Some of these children were born by the surname of Odle and some of them married by the surname of Odle. According to Peter Franklin Martin's daughter-in-law who died in 2002, the family was known by both Martin and Odle and some time after her marriage in to the family, Peter Franklin Martin concluded that the family would be known by the single surname of Martin.]

John Odle Martin died 6 Nov 1902 in Harrison Co., W.Va. He and his wife Millie Ann Crimm are buried in Pine Bluff Cemetery, Pine Bluff, Harrison Co., W.Va.
