DESCENDANTS OF JOHN BANKS KNAPP Generation No. 1 1. JOHN BANKS2 KNAPP (LEVI1) was born 1785, and died 1846. He married HANNAH STEWART March 01, 1818. She was born 1801, and died 1865. Notes for JOHN BANKS KNAPP: ARTICLE: History of Marshall County West Virginia 1984, Page 172 THE KNAPP FAMILY From old family history records, John Banks Knapp (1785-1846) was the first of this line of Knapps to make an appearance in Marshall County. He was the son of Levi Knapp who migrated from Germany to Canada, possibly by way of England. Levi's brother, John, came to Baltimore and Levi settled in Quebec. John Banks Knapp married Miss Hannah Stewart (1801-1865) on March 1, 1818, and they began their life together on a farm in Marshall County. They had ten children: Levi (1819-____), Elizabeth (1821-1908), John (1823-1826), Catherine (1825-1862), Andrew (1828-1900), Mary Amelia (1830-____), John Robert (1833-190), William Elder (1835-____), Alva (1839-1919), and Benjamin Stewart (1842-1863). Unfortunately, Hannah was left a widow in 1846 with several of these children still at home but the family working together continued to earn a living on their farm. On November 16, 1854, John Robert Knapp married Mary Virginia Crow at Jacksonville, Pennsylvania (now Wind Ridge); she, it is believed, was a descendant of the early pioneer Crow family on Wheeling Creek. To this union several children were born who lived to adulthood. They were Lucinda, Emma, John H., Martin C., Margaret, Hannah and Nevada (always known to family and friends as Vada). Lucinda married Francis Erlewine on April 13, 1875, Emma married Wiley Johnson, September 2 ,1875, John H. married Blanche O. Conners on December 25, 1900, Martin C. married Kate M. Coulter on June 4, 1893, Margaret married W. Finley Ruth on May 7, 1891, Hannah married Morgan Grimm July 4, 1893, and Vada married George W. Dallison on February 21, 1907. The National Archives records Washington, DC, disclose the John Robert served in the union forces during the civil war. He was a corporal in the 12th Regiment, Company C, West Virginia Volunteer Infantry (No. 933.968). His brother, Benjamin Stewart, Alva and Andrew also served. John [error: Benjamin] Stewart lost his life in the war. John Robert's military and pension histories are both on record at the National Archives. Following the Civil War, he returned home to Marshall County where he continued to farm and later became a rural mail carrier in the county. He also worked as a carpenter. John Robert Knapp (1833-1910) and Mary Virginia Crow Knapp (1838-1916) are buried at Beeler Station (Marshall County) in the church cemetery. No immediate descendants of this family now live in Marshall County. Descendants of Margaret Knapp (Mrs. W. Finley Ruth) now live in the New Martinsville, West Virginia, area. ANDERSON DIED Ora Gail Anderson of 501 Tenth street, died Sunday at Reynolds Memorial Hospital. She was born Jan. 14, 1893, at Wolf Run, daughter of George and Clara Knapp Bungard. She was a Protestant (Baptist) by faith. She was preceded in death by her husband Samuel J. in 1970. (Mr. Anderson will be remembered as county school superintendent here some years ago. He had also worked at the unemployment office in Wheeling, and as a Marshall County teacher. She is survived by five sons, Kenneth of Glen Easton, Carl of Glen Dale, Paul and John of Moundsville, Meryl of Glen Easton; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Mildred) Riley of Fork Ridge, and Mrs. Lawrence (Mary) Dobbs of Moundsville; one sister, Mrs. Ray (Faye) Riggle of Cameron; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-four great- grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Lutes Funeral Home, Tuesday 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. where services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Frank Crow Jr. officiating. NOTE: Her obituary didn't include the fact that she was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence Burdette Anderson, in 1939. NOTE: Grandma Gail (She absolutely hated to called "Granny"), was a very hard working lady. Disregard the term "housewife." She was that and a whole lot more. She took care of eight children, some of which were during the depression. She tended to all the household chores including the livestock such as the chickens that they had. She washed clothes for people in and around Glen Easton for extra money. These are just a few things I've learned of a, no doubt, extraordinary lady. She was undoubtedly a hard working lady and a loving, caring mother to her children. I only wished I could have met her. ARTICLE: Moundsville Daily Echo, Friday, January 30, 1931 GLEN EASTON Miss Oma Dobbs of Middle Fork ridge, spent Tuesday evening with County Superintendent elect and MRS. S. J. More About ORA GAIL BUNGARD: Burial: May 29, 1980, Highland Cemetery, Cameron, Marshall County, West Virginia Cause of Death: Cardiac Arrest Nationality: German, English Occupation: Housewife Religion: Baptist Notes for SAMUEL JACOB WALTER SCOTT ANDERSON: OBITUARY: Moundsville Daily Echo, May 19, 1970 S. J. ANDERSON DIED THIS MORNING Samuel J. Anderson, 80, of RD 1, Glen Easton, expired at 5:40 p.m. today, Tuesday, at Reynolds Memorial Hospital. He was born April 2, 1890, at New Freeport, Pennsylvania, the son of James and Mary Bert(d)ine Anderson. He was a retired school teacher and former superintendent of Marshall County Schools. Mr. Anderson was the first county superintendent of schools under the County Unit system here. He had been elected county superintendent under the old School District system, in about 1928, (his two immediate predecessors were H. E. Carmichael, and then J. Sherman Welch.) Under that system, some of the larger districts had their own individual superintendents, but all were under a general (elected) superintendents. Naturally, the district without individual superintendents required more attention from the general county man.) Then, around 1932 or '33, the County Unit system came in, with just the general superintendent, appointed by the Board of Education. Mr. Anderson had two years of his term remaining, and thus served the first two years as superintendent of the county under the new system. The late Louis R. Potts had been superintendent of Washington district, then became assistant to Mr. Anderson, before becoming general county superintendent. It is interesting to note that Mr. Anderson was the first school teacher of Ernest McNinch, present county superintendent-at the old Rosen Berger school, Webster district. LATER POSITIONS S. J. Anderson had later been employed at the Unemployment Compensation Board of Wheeling, and most recently was an instructor at the W. Va. Penitentiary. He was a member of the Pleasant Valley Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Gail Bungard Anderson; five sons, Kenneth and Merle of Glen Easton, Carl (Sr.) of Glen Dale, Paul of RD 2, Moundsville, and John of Moundsville; two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Riley of Glen Easton and Mrs. Mary Dobbs of Moundsville; two brothers, Jess of Garrison, Pa., and Charles of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one sister Mrs. Arlie Himelrick of Terrill Ridge; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. One son preceded him in 1939 Friends will be received at the Lutes Funeral Home today from 7-9 and Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. S. J. ANDERSON FUNERAL THURSDAY Funeral services for Samuel J. Anderson will be conducted at lutes funeral Home, Thursday at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. John Mason officiating. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery. NOTE: S. J. Anderson was the last superintendent to be elected to the position and the very first under the "new" system of appointed superintendents, all others following him were and are appointed to the post. S. J. was first elected in 1930, took office in 1931, was reelected to the position and midway through his second term, the process by which Marshall County got its superintendents was changed from electing them to appointing them, technically making S. J. the very first superintendent under the "new" system and the last elected. NOTE: S. J. Anderson was the very first superintendent of Marshall County under the new system and the last superintendent to be elected to the position, all others following him were and are appointed to the post. Before S.J. was a delivery man for the post office and had a route in Glen Easton all the way out to Navoo Ridge, in all a total of 28 miles. He delivered his mail on horse & buggy, he opted for this type of transportation due to the fact that, as he put it, "a Model T wouldn't stop for you when you said whoa." The model T had gotten away from him and he wound up running into a tree. S.J. was a teacher for a time, he started teaching at the age of 17. He graduated from West Liberty State College in 1923 and was in school the same time his daughter Mildred was there at WLSC and his son Carl was at Salem college. He worked down in Parkersburg for 10 years. After he was superintendent of schools, S.J. was office manager at the Unemployment Compensation Board in Moundsville and later moved to that same job in Wheeling. NOTE: S.J., as he was called, was a very smart man. He had to be. He was a teacher in his younger days, having graduated from West Liberty State College. He later went on to be superintendent of schools for Marshall County, being the very last elected to the position and the first under the new system. After being the superintendent, S.J. was on the Unemployment Compensation Board of Wheeling, no doubt an important position. After his retirement, he didn't like not working. So he took up a position as an instructor at the West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville. These are just a few of the major accomplishments that I've learned of S.J.'s life. All this coming from a man who was born into a rather large family and growing up in a very rural area of Greene County, Pennsylvania before moving to Marshall County and starting his family. One job he had in his younger days was of a carried of mail all around the county. He would go around on the various ridges on a horse and carriage, sometimes for days at a time, having to stay the night at friendly families houses. ********************************************************************* More About SAMUEL JACOB WALTER SCOTT ANDERSON: Burial: May 21, 1970, Highland Cemetery, Cameron, Marshall County, West Virginia Cause of Death: Congestive Heart Failure Education: Business Training at Elliott Commercial School Graduation: August 10, 1923, West Liberty Normal School Medical Information: Died at 5:40 p.m. at Reynolds Memorial Hospital.
