The first mention of the Smallwood line in America is the awarding of a land grant to James Smallwood and Hester in 1664 from Arthur Keith's "Smallwood Family of Charles Co., MD." The land transactions of James Smallwood were numerous. His various grants and purchases included "Goat Ridge, 150 acres, Welcome, 200 acres, Pork Hill, 113 acres, Eltham, 75 acres, May Day, 300 acres, Tasch Hall, 60 acres, Bachelors Hope, 184 acres, Batchellors Delight, 235 acres, and Friendship. He was able to make generous provisions for his descendants. (Source: Keith) James Smallwood was appointed to convey all public intelligence to his Lordship and his council. As his service fell within a troublous period of Indian disturbance, the appointment at this post involved considerable danger and distinction. During the administration of Governor Coply, James Smallwood was chosen Assemblyman by the Freeman of Charles County, Virginia. From that date until his death he represented Charles County in the Maryland Assembly. He introduced in the Lower House a bill for establishment of Protestant religion in the Colony. Major James Smallwood was authorized to raise his company on the east side of Port Tobacco and on the north side of the Potomac River. In Major James Smallwood was a Vestryman on Piscattaway Parish, Charles County, Maryland. On June 9, 1700 James Smallwood is called Lieutenant Colonel and thereafter his name in records is prefixed with the title "Colonel". Their main station was at Port Tobacco, with another at Piscataway Creek, of the Potomac. They guarded the settlement against the Susquehannock Indians. In 1688-89 he was involved in the Orange Rebellion, and advanced in military rank over the years. He was a major in 1692 and Lt. Col. in 1700, and afterwards a Colonel. In 1680 he was appointed "Post for Charles County" for conveying "public intelligence" to the Governor and Council. This was the first letter post for outlying Charles County. From 1692 until his death Col. James represented Charles County as a Burgess in the MD Assembly. He often acted as liaison with the Indians, since he had their confidence. In 1694 he was Sheriff of Charles County. On June 9, 1700 he is called Lt. Col James Smallwood, and shortly after that date his name is regularly prefixed with the title "Colonel". At the time of his death he was living at Bew (Beau) Plains in Prince George County which was the plantation of his second wife Mary.
