Severely Wounded at New Market, 15 May 1864; POW; Declared Dead


At the close of the war, the fate of Levi Cunningham Stewart was unknown. He was severely wounded at the Battle of New Market on May 15, 1864 and was taken prisoner. The records of the West Virginia Adjutant General do not reflect the fact that the soldier died while a POW.

The soldier's widow, Sarah Jane Fletcher, whom he married 2 May 1853 in Greene County, Pennsylvania, filed a claim for a Widows's Pension. Selections are presented here:
