JOHN ROBERT TOLBERT, Company "A"

John R. Tolbert is identified in this PHOTO

John Robert Tolbert, born in Dallas, Marshall County, on July 11, 1838, was the son of Bazil Tolbert and Malinda Turner. In the 1850 census, Bazil and Malinda were the parents of Sydney, John R., Cecilia and Mary E.

John R. Tolbert married Lavinia/Lavina Anne Lightner on August 30, 1857 in Marshall County. In 1860, they lived in Sherrard. John was a Cooper and they had a two year old son, Henry.

During the war, John served three years in the 12th West Virginia Infantry. He mustered in on August 16, 1862, at Wheeling, and mustered out at Richmond on June 16, 1865. According to the records of the West Virginia Adjutant General, John was wounded at New Market, Virginia, on May 15, 1864.

By 1880, John was a carpenter and resided with his family at Triadelphia, Ohio County. Their children were Henry O., Basil R., John R., Edin A., Hannibal, Agnes A., Susan, Lara, and Lavina.

John R. Tolbert died on December 29, 1926 at Triadelphia. He is buried at Stone Church Cemetery, Elm Grove.
