Mini-Biography of Henry Conkle
Henry Conkle-was born around 1843. He lived in the Triadelphia of Ohio County, WV for a number of years prior to enlisting in the Army. He enrolled on the 15th day of August 1861 at East Richland in Co. D, 1st Regiment of West Virginia Cavalry Volunteers as a Private. He mustered in on October 1st, 1861 for three years or during the war.
He re mustered as a Vet. Volunteer January 1st, 1864. On May 6, 1864, while on a night march in the mountains on the Lynchburg raid, near Logans Court House, his horse stumbled and fell on him, injuring his right knee. This injury would later lead to getting an Invalid Pension. He was mustered out with his unit on July 8th, 1865 at Wheeling, WV.
After the war resided in Belmont County, Ohio, -- first in Barnesville until about 1890 and then in Hendrysburg until his death on June 3rd, 1907. He was a cigar maker for most of his life until his health gave out. He married Charity Williams on March 21, 1891 at Hendrysville. She died February 12, 1893. They had no children.
On this 24th day of April A. D. one thousand eight hundred and sixty nine, personally appeared before me, clerk of the Common Pleas, a Court of Record within and for the County and State aforesaid, Henry Conkle, aged 24 years, a resident or the County of Belmont, in the State of Ohio, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Henry Conkle who enlisted in the service of the United States at Wheeling in the State of West Virginia, on or about the 23 day of December in the year 1863 as a Corporal in Company “D” commanded by Lieut. Charles Armstrong in the First Regiment of West Va. Vet Cav Vols commanded by Colo. Capehart in the war of 1861, and was honorably discharged at Wheeling West Va., on or about the 8th day of July in the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty-five; that while in the service aforesaid, and in the line of his duty, That when he was at a place called Logans Court House in the State of Va. on the 6 day of May A. D. 1864 was injured as follows: While crossing Mountains in the State of Virginia the horse he was riding fell on him injuring his right knee making it stiff so much so that it interferes with the proper use of the same.
That since leaving said service, this applicant has resided in the County of Belmont, in the State of Ohio, and his occupation has been cigar maker.
That prior to his entry into the service above named, he was a man of good, sound physical health, being when enrolled, a ________.
That now he is ________ disabled from obtaining his subsistence from manual labor in consequence of the above named injuries, received in the service of the United States.
He makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed an the Invalid Pension Roll of the United States, by reason of the disabilities above stated, and revoking and countermanding all other authority that may have been given, he hereby constitutes and appoints, with full power of substitution and revocation Hall & Lowe of Steubenville, Ohio, his true and lawful attorney, to represent his claim, and obtain the pension certificate that may be issued. That his Post Office is at Barnesville, County of Belmont, State of Ohio. That his domicile or place of abode is Barnesville, Belmont County, State of Ohio.

Barnes, Esq. and George Scheck, residents of the County of Belmont in the State of Ohio, persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who, being by me duly sworn, say that they were present and saw Henry Conkle sign his name to the foregoing declaration; and they further swear that they have every reason to believe, from the appearance of the applicant and their acquaintance with him that he is the identical person he represents himself to be, and they further swear that they reside as above stated, and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim.

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt from your Office of application for Pension No. 142.861, and to return it herewith, with such information as is furnished by the files of this Office.
It appears from the Rolls on file in this office, that Henry Conkel was enrolled on the 15th day of Aug., 1861, at East Richland in Co, “D” 1st Regiment of W. Va. Cav Volunteers, to serve 3 years, or during the war, and mustered into service as a Pvt. On the 1st day of Oct., 1861, at Wheeling, in Co. “D”, 1st Regiment of W. Va. Cav Volunteers, to Serve 3 years, or during the war. On the Muster Roll of Co. “D” of that Regiment, for the months Nov. & Dec. 1863, he is reported present for duty. Reenlisted a Veteran Dec. 23rd, 1863. On roll for Sept. & Oct. 1864. “_______ Remustered Jany. 2nd 1864” present. Returning rolls not on file. (Co. engaged May 10th 1864 at Wytheville, Va.). Mustered out July 8th, 1865 with his company. No evidence of wounds or disability on file.
