Company "A" of the First West Virginia Cavalry was organized by Captain William A. West and mustered in at Clarksburg, WV, in the month of June 1861. A portion of the Company re-enlisted as Veterans on the dates herein specified and the remainder was mustered out on September 10, 1864, at expiration of their term of service and the Company was thereupon re-organized by Captain William A. Powell at Wheeling, WV, and was mustered out pursuant to telegram from War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D. C., dated June 18, 1865, to Captain N. P. Hudson, Chief Mustering Officer on July 8, 1865, to Captain M. P. Hudson, Chief Mustering Officer on July 8, 1865, at Wheeling, WV, by William L. Fuller, 1st Lieutenant, Third U. S. Artillery, Mustering Officer. Captain Durritt's Company "I" was known and mustered out as Company "A".
