JOSEPH ARCHEY, Company "H"

By Linda Fluharty.

Joseph Archey (also Archy) is found in the 1850 census of Ohio County in the home of John F. Archey, 62, born Germany. The female, presumably Joseph's mother, was Margret, 44, born Ohio. Siblings were John H., 10; Elizabeth, 6; Sarah Ann, 3.

Joseph's exact dates of service in the 1st Cavalry are in conflict in the various records of the West Virginia Adjutant General. However, at the outset of the war he enlisted in Company "B" of the 1st (West) Virginia Infantry, organized for three months, May-August 1861. Upon discharge he enlisted in the 1st Cavalry for three years, and then re-enlisted to serve until the end of the war. At some point, he was wounded and was hospitalized at Parkersburg, Wood County.

Joseph married Catherine Coulter, a widow, 9 Sep 1866 in Ohio County, West Virginia. Her maiden name may have been Reed, based on a death record of her daughter, Amanda Archey Ritchie. They are found in Wheeling in the 1870 Census: Joseph, 28, was working in a rolling mill; Catherine was 37. Others in the home were Francis, 24; William G., 19; Anna, 9; Emma, 7; Amanda J., 2. The older four are obviously not their children; might be related to her former marriage.

In 1876, Joseph applied for and received a government pension, certificate #151267.

At the time of the 1880 census of Ohio County, Joseph Archey and Catherine were living on Wood Street in South Wheeling, in close proximity to a number of other Civil War vets. Joseph Archey, 39; wife, Catherine 36; daughter, Anne, 20 (obviously Catherine's daughter); James Coulter, 23, stepson; Emma Coulter, 17, step-daughter; Amanda Archey, 12, daughter; Charlotte Archey, 8, daughter.

Catherine died 11 Feb 1890 and is buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Wheeling. There was another Catherine Archey whose death occurred in Feb 1889, but she was born in Maryland and seems to be a different person.

According the 1890 Ohio County census of Veterans & Widows, Joseph Archey, private, Company "H", 1 W. Va. Cav., enlisted 11 Aug 1861, was discharged 8 Jul 1865. His address was 3745 Wetzel Street, Wheeling.

Joseph Marple married Margaret Delilah Marple, daughter of George and Isabella Marple, in 1891 in Ohio County. At the time of the 1900 census, they were living in McMechen, Marshall County, with Margaret's parents. They had two children, Mary Isabel, born May 1892, and William E., born Aug 1895. They later moved to Sherrard, Marshall County.

The death of Joseph Archey, 76, occurred at Glen Dale Hospital 20 Mar 1918. He is buried at the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Wheeling. Margaret received a widow's pension from the government, certificate #857704. She died in 1933 and is buried at Allen Grove Cemetery, Sherrard.
