BIOGRAPHY

History of Allamakee County

     J. J. JENNEWINE, section 22, post office, Waukon; farmer and stock dealer; son of Nicholas and Catharine Jennewine; born December 28th, 1878, in Prussia, served three years in the Prussian army, from 1849 to 1852. In the spring of 1853 he emigrated to the United States, arriving at N.Y. the 7th of May, 1861, he enlisted in the 1st Virginia Cavalry. Upon the organization of the company he was elected 2d Lieutenant, and for meritorious conduct at the battle of Woodstock in the Shenandoah Valley, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. He participated in the battle of Romania, Cedar Mountain, Kelly's Ford, Centerville, Fairfax Court House, Culpepper, etc. On account of physical disability he resigned his office in 1863 and returned home. He immigrated to Iowa in the spring of 1865, locating in Jefferson Township upon his present farm of 120 acres, valued at $30 per acre. Mr. Jennewine was married to Miss Loretin Burgess, in Va., March 24, 1857; they have eight children, Charles H., Robert N., John J., Sophia, Maggie M., Adelie M., Ella H. and Catharine. He is a member of the I.O.O.F.

     JOHN JACOB JENNEWINE, was born 01 Jan 1828, died 16 Jul 1896 and is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Jefferson Twp, Allamakee County, Iowa. A G.A.R. marker is on his grave. His wife is listed in cemetery records as Lauretta.

OBITUARIES

Postville Review, 5/19/1888 - Miss Ella Jennewine, who was teaching the Lybrand school, died suddenly of apoplexy yesterday at the residence of E. Harris. She was indisposed only about an hour before her death. She was a sister of Mrs. J. H. McGhee, of Waukon and had resided with her in Postville and was well acquainted here. The relatives have our sincere condolence in their great and sudden bereavement.

Postville Review, 2/18/1888 - Mrs. J. J. Jennewine, an old resident of Jefferson township, died of consumption last Monday, aged about 50 years. She was the mother of Mrs. Jas. H. McGhee, and was a very estimable Christian woman. [Died 13 Feb 1888]
