JOHN WILLIAM KLEIN, Company "D"

     In Bethel Methodist Cemetery, Jefferson Twp., Washington Co., PA, is a simple stone for: "William Klein, 1836-1915."

     The 1890 census of Civil War veterans for Jefferson Twp.: "William Kline, Pvt., Co. D, 1st W.V. Cav., res. - Independence, Pa."

     On pages 1141-42 of Joseph F. McFarland's 20th Century History of the City of Washington and Washington County, Pennsylvania: J. William Klein, born in Wellsburg (WV) on Mar. 11, 1836, was the son of John F. and Margaret Ann (Metz) Klein. The family moved to Jefferson Twp., while William was a child. He "enlisted as a member of Co. D, 1st Va. [sic] Cav. ...served three years, and during this time was once wounded slightly." On Feb. 8, 1870, he married Harriet, daughter of Robert and Margaret (Wilson) Stewart. [Her stone says: "Harriet Klein, 1840-1926."] They had no children. He was a farmer in Jefferson Twp.
