Certificate Of Disability For Discharge

Army of the United States
     Private MICHAEL BARRETT of Captain Cunningham's Company "L" of the First Virginia Cavalry Regiment of the United States Vols was enlisted by L. S. Schuman of the 1st Regiment of Virginia Cavalry at Clarksburg, Va. on the 15th day of February 1862, to serve 3 years; he was born in Ireland is 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, and by occupation when enlisted a laborer. During the last two months said soldier has been unfit for duty 60 days.

Station: Union Chapel Hospital, 20th Str. Washington, DC.
Date: Novbr 19th 1862.

     I certify, that I have carefully examined the said Priv. Mich. Barrett, of Captain Cunningham's Company, and find him incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of CANNON SHOT WOUND RIGHT THIGH TAKING OUT A MASS OF INTEGUMENT & MUSCLE JUST ABOVE THE KNEE, WALKS WITH DIFFICULTY. DISABILITY 1/5.

Discharged this 21st day of Novbr 1862, at Washington, DC.

Third. What record of marriage exists?
Answer. Recorded in Marriage Register of Catholic Church Clarksburg.

Fourth. Were you previously married? If so, please state the name of your former wife and the date and place of her death or divorce.
Answer. Yes, first wife Julie Turney(?) died in 1875 in Clarksburg.

Fifth. Have you any children living? If so, please state their names and the dates of their birth.
Answer. Yes. Three. Mary, Michael, Patrick Barrett. All over 16, youngest 37.

Declaration For Widow's Pension
State of West Virginia, County of HARRISON, ss:

     On this 25th day of OCTOBER, AD one thousand nine hundred and five, personally appeared before me, a Notary public, within and for the County and State aforesaid, CAROLINE BARRETT, aged 55 years, a resident of CLARKSBURG County of HARRISON, State of W.Va. who, being duly sworn according to law, declared that she is the widow of MICHAEL BARRETT, on the 15th day of FEBRUARY A.D. 1862, as a PRIVATE in Company D, in the 1st Regiment of VIRGINIA CAV Volunteers, and served at least ninety days in the late War of the Rebellion, in the service of the United States, who was Honorably Discharged Nov 21st 1862, and died October 1st 1905. That he was not employed in the military or naval service of the United States after the said 21st day of November, 1862. That she was married under the name of CAROLINE SMITH to said MICHAEL BARRETT, on the 18th day of FEBRUARY AD 1878, by Father Hugh P. McMenamin at Clarksburg W.Va., there being no legal barrier to such marriage; that she had been previously married; that her husband had been previously married. (4) Her husband was JOHN SMITH who was reported killed while in the Confederate service but can't give the date. JULIA BARRETT the first wife of said MICHAEL BARRETT died Jany 1875.

    &mnsp;That NO prior application for pension has been filed by herself but the soldier was a pensioner certificate No 88636.
That she makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension-roll of the United States, under the provisions of the act of June 27, 1890. She hereby appoints, with full power of substitution and revocation, Harvey W. Harmer of Clarksburg, WVa her true and lawful attorney to prosecute her clain, the fee to be ten dollars, payable as prescribed by law.
That her Post-Office address is Clarksburg, County of Harrison, State of W.Va.
