DRYDEN PAULEY, Company "L"

Submitted by Jeff Pauley.

Dryden Pauley is listed as Paully Dryden in the Adjutant General's records of the 1st West Virginia Cavalry. Dryden served as a substitute in the 1st Cavalry, probably after his service in the 8th West Virginia Infantry, which subsequently became the 7th West Virginia Cavalry.

Dryden Pauley was born abt. 1830 in Logan County, (W)Va., the son of Meredith Pauley and Myluda Neal. Dryden was married twice. He first married Sarah America Dodson on October 13, 1852 in Kanawha County, (W)Va. They had one daughter, Amelia, before Sarah died in 1857. Dryden then married Sarah Melissa Hall on March 12, 1868 in Kanawha County. She was born in 1825 in Fayette County, (W)Va. They had two children together, Laura Drucilla and Cornelius Lewis Pauley. Dryden died in 1905 and is buried in the Childress Cemetery in Kanawha County. It is believed that Sarah Hall was of Indian blood. Sarah and Dryden's marriage is listed in the Kanawha County marriages among the "colored" marriages on the date the license was issued and the under "white" marriages on the date of the marriage.
