Submitted by Gary A. Cadle, gr-gr-nephew.

Beckwith H. Saer was born 22 Nov. 1831 in (W)Va, probably in present day Morgantown, Monongalia County, but possibly present day Preston County. His parents were Josiah Wesley Saer and Joanna Sterling Saer. Siblings included Annamelia (died as a child), Mary Ellen (Jorden), Delia Aminy (Powell), Emery Brammell Saer (1st WV Calvary, Company A), Nancy Ann Eliz (Huffman), and William Maxwell Saer (2nd PA Heavy Artillery, Company I). Beckwith enlisted 18 Jul 1861, and re-enlisted 24 Feb 1864, serving in Companies A & G. In addition to his military career, he was also a constable and a shoemaker.

Beckwith was one of five who drowned at Dunkard Riffle on the Monongahela River 19 Feb 1869. He was 37 years old. The Morgantown paper contains the following quote: "Bereft, in an unexpected hour, of her husband, Mrs. Saer is left with a large family of little children dependent upon her, and as most of our readers are aware, needs something more than the cold sympathies of the world to support them. We appeal to the liberal spirit of our generrous-hearted people in her behalf, and feel sure that the good citizens of Morgantown will endeavor, by their deeds of charity, to lighten the double load of anguish that now rests upon her heart in this her greatest earthly sorrow."

He is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Morgantown, W.Va.
