The grave marker of Thomas Lindsey Cross in Cairo, WV lists his date of birth as 4 Nov 1830. This fairly well confirms him as the Sinery Cross in the home of William and Rebecca (Porter) Cross in the 1850 Allegany Co, Md. census. We suspect Rebecca named her first born for her mother’s father, Thomas Glissan. In 189_ (blank not filled in) Thomas gave his age as 59. By the affidavits of his military file (812948) he married Rosanna Lashbaugh 18 Dec 1852 in Allegany Co, Md/26 Dec 1852 at her brother Lewis’s home in Pompey Smash Md. He and Rosanna followed his parents to Greene Co Pa at their move there in 1856 and then to Washington Co, OH between 1860 and 1870. His 1870 Lawrence Twp., Washington Co, OH census lists him incorrectly as Linsley Crossy. He like so many of the other men in his family was a blacksmith.

26 Feb 1864 Thomas enlisted in Co B 1st WV Cavalry; Private until discharge 8 July 1865. One pension application dated 11 July 189_ (blank not filled in) shows that he was then living in Cairo, Ritchie Co, WV. Undated affidavit reads age 60 “the rheumatism with which I am afflicted contracted in (illegible) in Lew Ray Val.ly (sic) in the fall of 1864 the first time I ever knew pain of that kind and the loss of my eye was caused by granulation sore eyes about the year 1874”. Thomas died 6 Mar 1894; buried Cairo Baptist Church Cemetery, Cairo, Ritchie Co, WV. Rosanna applied for benefits 14 Apr 1894 and 24 May 1894 listing no minor children. She continued to reside in Cairo until her death in 1907.
