Elijah M. Yates, born August 8, 1843 in Wheeling, Ohio County, (W) Virginia, was the son of Elijah W. Yates and his wife, Mildred Ann Rigsby.

Elijah W. Yates, and sons, Elijah M. and Granville, enlisted at Ceredo, (W) Virginia on 14 Aug 1861, to serve for 3 years.

The father, Elijah W. Yates, was forty-one when he enlisted with his sons. He was discharged on a surgeon's certificate of disability 23 June 1862.

Granville Yates was captured at Guyandotte, Virginia 10 Nov 1861, and he died a POW at Richmond 25 Dec 1861.

Elijah M. Yates was taken prisoner at Warrenton, Virginia 1 Mar 1863, and was released 31 Aug 1863. (Therefore, he was not at Gettysburg.)

According to published genealogies, Elijah M. Yates married Mary Jane Coleman, the daughter of David Hays Coleman and Mary Janes Hedges, October 11, 1866. The children of Elijah M. and Mary Jane were David Coleman, Clark Linn, Virginia, and Clara Emma Yates.

Elijah M. Yates died, possibly on 13 April 1872, and his widow applied for and received a government pension, certificate number 257.101.

Mary Jane died in Bloomington, Illinois on 18 August 1895.
