ELIJAH W. YATES, Company "G"


Elijah W. Yates, born about 1820, was the son of Richard N. Yates and Winifred Settle.

With his sons, Elijah M. and Granville, Elijah W. Yates enlisted at Ceredo, (W) Virginia on 14 Aug 1861, to serve for 3 years.

Elijah W. Yates was forty-one when he enlisted. He was discharged on a surgeon's certificate of disability 23 June 1862.

Granville Yates was captured at Guyandotte, Virgnia 10 Nov 1861, and he died a POW at Richmond on 25 Dec 1861.

Elijah M. Yates was taken prisoner at Warrenton, Virginia 1 Mar 1863, and was released 31 Aug 1863. (Therefore, he was not at Gettysburg.)

According to published genealogies, Elijah W. Yates married Mildred Anne Rigsby. Their children in the 1860 Federal Census were Granville, William H., Warner W., and Elijah M.

Mrs. Yates died in 1885. Elijah W. married Sarah Jane Harris and had two daughters, Mamie Agnes and Leola W.

Elijah W. Yates applied for and received government pension certificate #570.994 in 1890. He died in Wetzel County, West Virginia 20 May 1904.
