WIDOW'S PENSION - MARY JANE GARNER YOUNG

From the records of the West Virginia Adutant General: "YOUNG, Joseph; enrolled at Grafton, W.Va.; age 28; mustered in Oct. 5, 1861, Grafton, W.Va.; ---. Killed by the enemy Dec 18, 1862, at Centreville, Va." - Some records state the date of death as December 22. His *might* be the grave at Arlington National Cemetery, with no date or service information.

Joseph Young is named in the 1890 U. S. Census of Widows and Veterans, Clinton County, Ohio, as having served in "Company H, 1 Va. Cavalry - Killed Jan. 18, 1862 on Picket."

According to the 1860 census of Martinsville, Clinton County, Ohio, Joseph was born in North Carolina. He and Mary are found in the census with their daughter, Ida, age 1.

The widow, Mary Jane Garner, daughter of Joseph and Rebecca West Garner, died Sept. 13, 1911 in Clinton County, Ohio. She is buried at West Chapel Cemetery, Clinton County.

[Note: On ancestry.com, numerous people have this soldier identified as Joseph Young, the son of Andrew Young and Ruth Wade of Marshall County, W.Va., found in the 1850 census. He was not, as shown in these official records.]
