     Richard Huggins born ca. 1824 (his pension record says 1815) in Marshall Co., W.Va. & died Mar 24, 1902 (his pension record says June) at 2844 Moyston St., Wheeling, Ohio Co., W.Va. Richard was a laborer and a carpenter. He served as a Cpl. during the Mexican War in Co. K, 11 Regt., U.S. Inf., enlisting Mar. 23, 1847 & was discharged Aug. 17, 1848. He spent 10 days in Mexico during that war and his record says that he was 5 ft. 8 1/2 inches tall, with florid complexion (i.e., red-ruddy), brown hair and hazel eyes. His later Civil War record says he was 5 ft. 10 inches tall, Auburn hair, hazel eyes, with light complexion. Richard enlisted Oct. 1, 1861 during the Civil War in the Union Army. He was a Sgt. in Co. E, 1st Regt., W.Va. Vol. Inf. and he was discharged Jan. 25, 1864. He re-enlisted Jan. 26, 1864 and served as a Sgt. in Co. H, 2nd Regt. W.Va. Vol. Infantry (note: Veteran Vols.) and was discharged, due to injuries, on May 23, 1865. During his first term of service he fell on the ice in Jan., 1862 at Blue Gap, Va., injuring his left knee which later caused him problems. In Aug., 1863 he was struck in the right eye by a "gun cap" which caused blindness in that eye. During his second term on June 5, 1864 he was shot in the right leg, fracturing 2 bones in the middle of the leg. He was declared "one-half disabled" on his pension record. He received $8 per month pension from the service in the Mexican War.
     Richard Married (1) Sept. 27, 1849 by Squire J. Finley Mays at West Alexander, Washington Co., Pa. to Susan Ann Conners born 1832 in Marshall Co., W.Va. Richard married (2) Dec 13, 1897 at St. Clairsville, Belmont Co., Ohio by Rev. David W. Chandler to Selina A. (Shorts) St. Myers, the daughter of Henry Shorts. She was born Apr. 27, 1842 at Birmingham, Worcester Co., England and died Dec. 28, 1922 at Wheeling, Ohio Co., W.Va. She was buried at the Peninsula Cemetery, Wheeling, W.Va. Selina's first husband John P. St. Myers died Aug. 1, 1889 at Wheeling, W.Va. He was a Pvt. in Co. V (note: error - was in Co C. of the 3 mo organization), 1st Regt., W.Va. Vol. Inf. during the Civil War, in the Union Army. She lost her first husband's pension when she married Richard Huggins but she received Richard's pension after he died which amounted to $30, until her death. Selina moved from Moyston St. to 141 24th St., Wheeling, W.Va. She had a son to her first husband named Alonzo St. Myers and she lived with him for a time after Richard died on Mozart Hill Road, Wheeling, W.Va.
