DAVID SPRINGER

David Springer, born about 1831, was the son of Uriah and Lydia (McDaniel) Springer. He married Ellen Fluharty 25 Nov 1852 in Wetzel County, (W) Virginia. Discharge document states he was born in Taylor County, but perhaps it was Tyler County. He may have re-enlisted in the 2nd Veteran infantry. His age was stated as 22 in 1865 but this, too, is an error, since he was born about 1831-33. David died 22 Feb 1867 of complications from measles contracted during the war. David's brother, Samuel Springer, also served in Company "H" of the 1st Infantry.

JUNE 25/83 - Dr. C. P. GARRETT of PINE GROVE, WETZEL CO. W.Va. testifies that he commenced to treat the soldier in Sept. 1865 on his return home from the Army for Pneumonia of the lungs caused by cold or the measles in the service: treated him regularly every week for said disease from his return home in Sept. 1865 to his death in Feby. 1867. Upon his first visit he found the soldier scarcely able to walk about, was almost a skeleton and grew worst until he died and was for several months before death not able to stand on his feet alone, was not able to do manual labor at any time after his return and from his personal knowledge the soldier was a sound healthy man at his enlistment. That he treated the soldier for general debility, hectic fever, cough and night sweats which terminated in dysentery which caused his death on Feby 22 1867. Office shows credibility "fair".
OCT 5/83 - Dr. GARRETT in answer to office letter states that he commenced to treat the soldier immediately on his return home in August 1865 for pneumonia, exact dates he cannot give of visits as he kept no account, but treated him regular from Aug. 1865 to his death, Feby 22, 1867.

On this FOURTH DAY OF AUGUST, A.D. ONE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-SIX personally appeared before me MORGAN MORGAN a Justice of the Peace the same being a court of record within and for the county and State aforesaid ELAN SPRINGER aged 44 years, who, being duly sworn according to law, makes the following declaration in order to obtain the pension provided by Act of Congress granting pensions to widows: That she is the widow of DAVID SPRINGER who VOLUNTEERED under the name DAVID SPRINGER at WHEELING, on the 6TH DAY OF MARCH 1864. VOLUNTEER in COMPANY F SECOND REGIMENT OF WEST Va. In the war of the 1865. UNITED STATES, who CAUGHT THE MEASLES WHILE AT WHEELING. CAUGHT COLD AN 1866. THE MEASLES AND DIED FROM THE SAME on the 22ND DAY OF FEB, A.D. 1867 who 1867. bore at the time of his death the rank of PRIVATE, in AFTER BEING 1868. DISCHARGED; that she was married under the name of ELAN SPRINGER to 1869. said DAVID SPRINGER on the 25TH DAY OF NOV, A.D. 1852 by JOHN ALLEY in 1870. WHETZEL CO, there being no legal barrier to such marriage; that neither 1871. she nor her husband had been previously married. That she has to the 1872. present date remained his widow; that the following are the names and 1873. dates of birth of all his legitimate children yet surviving who were 1874. under sixteen years of age at the father's death, to wit: HIS BY HERSELF.

It appears from the Rolls on file in this Office that DAVID SPRINGER was enrolled on the 26th DAY OF MARCH, 1864, at NEW MARTINSVILLE, in Co. H, 1st Regiment of W.Va. Volunteers, to serve 3 years or during the war, and mustered into service as a PRIVT-RECT on the 8TH DAY OF APRIL, 1864, at WEBSTER, W.Va., in Co, H, 1st Regiment of W.Va. Volunteers, to serve 3 years, or during the war. On the Muster Roll of Co H, of that Regiment, for the months of March & April, 1864, he is reported absent sick, in Hospital. July & Aug, 1864, present for duty without remark- Transferred on or about Nov 14/64 to 2nd W.Va Vet. Vols., in Company "F". On the M.Roll of said Co. for the months of Nov & Dec 1864, he is reported Pvt(?) present without remark. May & June 1865, deserted June 5/65. Co M.O. Roll, Privt., Rect. Deserted same date.

It appears from the records filed in this Office, that DAVID SPRINGER, Pvt, Co "H" 1 W.Va. Vols was treated in the Regt'l Hosp'l from April 11 to 17, 1864, for "RUBEOLA". He was admitted to Gen'l Hosp'l, Grafton, W.Va. APRIL 19, 1864, from Regt'l Hosp'l, with "MEASLES", and returned to duty JUNE 2, 1864. He was treated again at the Regt, at various dates from AUG 7 to NOV 9, 1864, for "DIARRHOEA, MUMPS, HEADACHE and FEVER INT(?)."

The records of the Regt afford no additional evidence in this case.

That she is the widow of DAVID SPRINGER who volunteered under the name of DAVID SPRINGER at WHEELING, W.Va. on the 26" DAY of MARCH, A.D. 1864, as a PRIVATE in CO. "F" 2d Regt. Of W.Va. Inf, Vols .........of war of 1861-65 who died after his discharge of disease contracted n service on 22" DAY OF FEBRUARY A.D. 1867.
That she married under the name of ELLEN FLUHARTY to said DAVID SPRINGER on the 25" day of NOVEMBER A.D. 1852, by JOHN ALLY at WETZEL CO, VA, there being no legal barrier to such marriage; that neither she nor her husband had been previously married....
