Inf also as a CAPTAIN and COMMISSARY of SUBSISTENCE U.S. VOLS. WIDOW No. 620.538 WAR DEPARTMENT, Record and Pension Department. Respectfully returned to the Commissioner of Pensions WILLIAM SINGLETON 1st Reg't Va. Inft* was enrolled Sept. 20th, 1861 and M.O. July 7th, 1864 to date July 6th 1864 From en. to m.o., he held the rank of 1st Lt. R.Q.M. and during that period the rolls show him present except as follows: April 30/63 absent, captured by the enemy April 27/63 near Romney, Va. June 30/63 absent taken up on rolls June 9/63 from desertion, parole acknowledged. Absent at Camp Chase, Ohio. Aug 31/63 captured by enemy, paroled, parole recognized. The Lieut sent to a Parole Camp and dropped from rolls and reports as regularly missing in action. Oct. 31/63 same report. Dec 31/63 absent detached as A.C.S. 2d Brig. 2d Div. Dept. W.Va. Same to June 30/64. Prisoner of war records show him captured at Hampshire Co. Va. date not shown. Paroled at Hampshire Co., Va. April 28/63. Parole examined by Col. Ould and rejected as defective in every respect. Present at C.C.O. July 15 and July 31/63 and Aug 31/63. Appears on returns of C.C.O. for July 31/63 - on special duty Comdg. Aug 31/63 absent with leave. Present at C.C.O. Aug 1st absent with leave. Aug. 15th Sept 1/63 present..... *Became 1st W.Va. Inft subsequent to Aug 31, 1861 William T. Singleton was commissioned Capt & CS of vols June 9, 1864, to rank June 7, 1864 and accepted appointment, July --. He was m/o and honorably discharged the service Aug 3, 65.... The records show that he was with the 2d Inf Div. Dept. W.Va. Aug to Dec-1864; 1st Infy Div Dep W.Va. Jany 1.65 to Mch. 65. He was ordered to relieve Capt. Conly as C.S. at Clarksburg and Grafton (Illegible). He was on duty as Depot Commissy at Clarksburg, W.Va. Mch to July 65. He was relieved and ordered home to report by letter per SO 145, Dept W.Va. July 13, 65. He was granted a leave of absence as follows: 20 days Jany 20.1865. In a letter dated Wheeling, W.Va. July 28. 1865 to A.G USA he states that he is awaiting orders. US Army Commissioner of Pensions ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ DECLARATION FOR WIDOW'S PENSION Act of June 27, 1890 State of WEST VA, County of OHIO, ss: On this 16 day of OCTOBER, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and ninety SEVEN personally appeared before me, a Clerk of the County Court within and for the County and State aforesaid, MARY E. SINGLETON, Aged 68 years, a resident of the CITY of WHEELING, County of OHIO, State of WEST VA, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow of WILLIAM T. SINGLETON who enlisted under the name of WILLIAM T. SINGLETON at WHEELING, W.Va., on the 20 day of SEPT A.D. 1861 in 1st VIRGINIA INFT VOLS. RANK 1st LIEUT & QUARTERMASTER LATER COMMISSARY OF SUBSISTANCE U.S. VOLS. and served at least ninety days in the late war of the Rebellion, who was honorably discharged 1865, and died 4 FEB 1871. That she was married under the name of MARY E. IRWIN, to said WILLIAM T. SINGLETON, on the 7 day of MARCH in 1854 by REV ALFRED PAULL, at WHEELING, W.Va. there being no legal barrier to such marriage THAT NEITHER SOLDIER NOR CLAIMANT HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY MARRIED AND THEY WERE NOT DIVORCED. That she has not remarried since the death of the said WILLIAM T. SINGLETON. That she is without other adequate means of support than her daily labor. That she has heretofore applied for pension and the number of her former application is 620538 under General Law. That she makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under the provisions of the Act of June 27, 1890. She hereby appoints JAMES A. HENRY of Wheeling, W.Va. her true and lawful attorney to prosecute her claim, and she directs that the sum of ten dollars be paid him for his services.
