EVANS was living in Pittsburgh, Pa., at the time of his enlistment, volunteered at that place, in April, 1861, being then only 18 years old, in Co. G, 1st W. Va. H. A. [correction: Light Artillery], which was assigned to Averill's brigade; promoted corporal; on special detached duty in pioneer corps about two weeks in November, 1861; in May, 1862, he was transferred to Co. B, Buell's Battery; furloughed 10 days in January, 1863, and rejoined his command at Martinsburg, Va.; he participated in the following engagements: Cross Keys, second Bull Run, Rocky Gap, Droop Mountain, Gettysburg, Hedgeville, the Salem raid, McDowell, Rich Mountain and Cedar Mountain; discharged at Wheeling, W. Va., June 17, 1864; member of New Castle Post, No. 100, G. A. R., Encampment, No. 9, U. V. L. Mr. Evans was born in Virginia, March 5, 1842, the son of Albert and Sarah A. (Burns) Evans, both living. At Pittsburgh, Aug. 29, 1864, he married Elizabeth J. Woods, who was born in Washington county, Pa., Dec. 16, 1843; by this union there are three children, born in the order named: Albert A., Jessie L. and Frank H. Mrs. Evans' parents were Samuel and Elizabeth R. (Link) Woods, now deceased. Henry H. Evans, brother of Rufus, serving in the same battery, was wounded [in the head] in August, 1863 [Rocky Gap, Va.]; Albert W. and John S. Evans served in Knapp's Battery; Andrew and James M. Woods brothers of soldier's wife, served in a Pennsylvania regiment, Andrew was killed at Gettysburg.
