     Martin Reader, age 9, was residing with the family of David Ruble at the time of the 1850 Federal Census of Switzerland Township, Monroe County, Ohio. One of the Ruble children was Catherine, age 6. In the 1860 Census, Martin, 19, was still residing with the David Ruble family. At that time, Catherine (spelled Katherine in 1860) was 16 and Martin was 19. Catherine is likely the recipient of this letter:




     In the 1870 Census, Martin, 30, was found in the same location in Ohio, married to Mary, age 36, a widow whose husband, William Harrison Starkey, died 14 Mar 1862 in Nashville, Tennessee. Children listed were Addie, 18; Clary, 14; William, 12; Leonard, age 2 months. Mary was Mary Powell, daughter of Adonijah and Harriett (Thomas) Powell, who married Starkey 7 Sep 1851 in Belmont County, Ohio. Her marriage to Martin Reader occurred in Monroe County on 21 Aug 1869. Mary died 10 Aug 1889.

     At the time of the 1900 Census, Martin Reader, age 60, was residing in Wood County, West Virginia with his wife, Sarah C., age 28, to whom he had been married for 10 years. They had three children, Bertha E., 10, Peoria M., 7, and Rheul R., 5. The children were born in West Virginia.

     In 1910, Martin Reader was listed in the census as a boarder in the home of Alexander and Alice Donaldson in Parkersburg.

     Martin Reader, born 23 Dec 1840, died in Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia on May 13, 1916. His government pension certificate number is 471.495.
