Service Record: At age 20, joined & enrolled for duty on Aug. 16, 1862 at Wheeling; mustered in at Wheeling on Aug. 23, 1862. “Died of Congestive Fever at Genl Hospital, Grafton, Va., June 3/4, 1863.” “...a farmer, born in Marshall County.” Detached as Brigade Teamster Feb. 11, 1863.

He is found with his widowed mother, Hannah (Stewart), in the 1850 Marshall County census as “Stewart Knapp.” His father, John Banks Knapp, had died in 1846. The family was listed twice in 1860, and he was both “Benjamin S.” and “Steward.”

He married Hannah Larue in Greene Co., Pa. in Mar. 1862; son, John Hilton Knapp, was born in Sept. 1863.

According the Marshall County military burials in a book by the late Audra Wayne, Benjamin S. Knapp is buried at Clouston Cemetery, death date June 3, 1862 (misread as 1862 instead of 1863 due to a deteriorated gravestone). Brothers, John “Robert,” Andrew and Alva(h) also served in the 12th W.Va. Infantry. Widow married John Thomas in 1866. A biography of this family was published in History of Marshall County West Virginia, 1984.
