OBITUARY

ROBERTS, JACOB JOSIAH - A well known resident of Paden City, WV, departed this life at his home in that city 15 Mar 1914. He was born at Moundsville, Virginia on 17 Mar 1837 and was in the 77th year of his age. He enlisted in Co. B, 12th Regt of the WV Infantry on 15 Aug 1862, and was discharged from the service on 10 Jun 1865. He resided in New Martinsville for a number of years and only recently moved to Paden City. Mr. Roberts became affiliated with the Church of Christ when quite young. He was well know throughout Wetzel, Tyler and Marshall counties. He had a large number of friends who learned of his death with much sorrow. He is survived by four sons, John of this city; Samuel of Pine Grove, WV; Henry of Smithfield, WV; and William of Louisiana; and by four daughters, Melvina of PA; Louisa and Alla of this city, and Lulu, at home.

Sir:
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt from your Office of application for Pension No. 228.380, and to return herewith, with such information as is furnished by the files of this Office.

It appears from the Rolls on file in this Office that Jacob J. Roberts was enrolled on the 15th day of August, 1862 at Wheeling, in Co. "B", 12th Regiment of West Virginia Infantry Volunteers, to serve three years, or during the war, and mustered into service as a Private on the 20th day of August, 1862 at Wheeling, in Co "B", 12th Regiment of West Virginia Infantry Volunteers, to serve three years, or during the war.

On the Muster Roll of Co."B", of that Regiment, for the months of to October 31, 1862, he is reported Corporal, absent at home in Marshall Co. Va. on sick leave from Oct. 20,1862. November and December 1862 present (without remark) He is not reported absent sick or otherwise on return for November 1862. Rolls to April 30th 1863 report him present. May & June 1863 absent. Missing in action at WinchesterJune 14, 1863. A Private reduced to the ranks from Corpl. May 30th, 1863 a fine of ten dollars stopped by order of Major Pierpoint, as per order war Dept. The company was in action as above stated. July & August 1863 same report. September & October 1863 present. So reported to February 29, 1864. March & April 1864, absent in Hospital at Martinsburg since April 29, 1864. Same report to Dec. 31, 1864. January & February 1865 present. March & April 1865 same. Mustered out with the Company June 16, 1865 as a Private. No evidence on rolls or returns of disability November 1862 in this case.

This man was captured at Winchester Va. June 14, 63 paroled at City Point Va. (unable to read) reported at Camp Parole, Md. July 2, 63 and deserted Aug 14, 63, Arrested Sept. 12, 63 in 13th Dist. Ohio and sent to Columbus Ohio Sept. 23, 63. Expenses of Arrest $4.66; there is no record that he was tried by Court Martial on the charge of desertion.

The records of this Office do not show him injured in November 1862.

GENERAL AFFIDAVIT
State of West Va., County of Marshall, ss

In the matter of the invalid Pension claim of Jacob J. Roberts On this 6th day of Sept. A.D. 1881; personally appeared before me a Notary Public in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths Amos Griffith aged 37 years, a resident of Liberty Dist. in the County of Marshal, and State of West Va. well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn, declares, in relation to the aforesaid case as follows; I was well and personally aquainted, with Ja cob J. Roberts for years before he enlisted in the 12th Reg. W.Va. Vol. Inft have been in swimming with him often and just before his enlistment saw him in a nude state in this section we use no swimming suit but go in the water in a nude state and further I was a member of the same company and reg. was in swimming with him often and saw him in a nude a nude state after his enlistment just prior to November 1862 I know thus know that there was no apperance of rupture until the time specified in his application and that he has been more or less disabled ever since from seeing him frequently in a nude state and some of the times immediately preceding enlistment, I feel confident in testifying that Roberts was entirly free from rupture at enlistment.

I further declare that I have no interest in said case and am not concerned in it's prosecution.

On this 28 day of Sep, A.D. one thousand nine hundred and seven personally appeared before me, a Notary Public within and for the county and State aforesaid, Jacob J Roberts, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is 70 years of age, and a resident of New Martinsville county of Wetzel, State of West Virginia; and that he is the identical person who was ENROLLED in Wheeling under the name of Jacob J Roberts, on thee 15 day of August, 1862 as a private, in Co. B, 12th W.Va. Regiment Volunteers in the service of the United States, in the Civil war, and was HONORABLY DISCHARGED at Richmond, Va., on the 16 day of June, 1865
That he also served ____________
That he also was not employed in the military or naval service of the United States otherwise than as stated above. That his personal description at enlistment was as follows: Height, 5 feet 6 Inches:
complexion, Fair; color of eyes, Brown; color of hair, lighter; that his occupation was Shoemaker; that he was born Aug 17, 1837, at Moundsville W.Va.
